Morocco Beats Egypt: Africa's #1 Tourist Destination in 2024
Morocco has emerged as Africa's top tourist destination in 2024, surpassing Egypt with 17.4 million visitors, marking a 20% increase from 2023 and a 33% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This milestone places Morocco two years ahead of its tourism growth projections, with aims to rank among the top 15 global tourist destinations. Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor credited this success to key initiatives, such as the launch of 120 new airline routes, including United Airlines' direct Newark-Marrakesh flight, and the establishment of luxury hotels like Four Seasons and Nobu. Additionally, Morocco focused on expanding air connectivity, promoting new domestic destinations, and renovating existing hotels.
The country generated record tourism revenue in 2024, reaching $11 billion, up from $10.5 billion in 2023. Morocco’s future prospects look promising, with upcoming global events like the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025-2026 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted with Spain and Portugal, expected to further bolster tourism. The government is ambitiously targeting 26 million visitors by 2030, a 50% surge over current levels. Morocco’s exceptional performance reflects broader growth trends in African tourism, which saw a 6% overall rise in arrivals in 2024, with North Africa demonstrating the strongest gains.
