African Air Travel Booms: November Passenger Demand Surges 12.4%
African air travel witnessed a robust surge in November 2024, with passenger demand rising by 12.4% year-on-year according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This outpaced the global demand growth of 8.1%, driven by increased international markets and capacity limitations. Africa saw a 6.0% boost in capacity, resulting in a load factor of 72.9%, a 4.1 percentage-point increase, underscoring the region's growing significance in global aviation.
Asia-Pacific led international growth with a remarkable 19.9% annual rise in demand, while Europe achieved the highest load factor at 85.0%. Domestically, global demand grew by 3.1%, with China (10.5%) and India (13.3%) spearheading domestic market expansions. Notably, North America faced challenges as US domestic RPKs declined by 2.7%, reflecting a broader slowdown in its domestic market.
IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, emphasized that while demand for air travel is accelerating, supply chain challenges in aerospace manufacturing are limiting airlines' ability to modernize fleets and meet growing demand. Record-high global load factors at 83.4% highlight these capacity constraints. African airlines' double-digit passenger growth showcases the continent's potential, affirming its rising role in the global aviation ecosystem and offering promising opportunities for expansion and innovation.
