Diplomats, cultural enthusiasts, and key players in the tourism and hospitality sector gathered at the La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Lagos State on Saturday to inaugurate the first-ever Ipada Carnival. This nine-day cultural festival, running from November 29 to December 8, celebrates the heritage of people of African descent and promotes a deeper connection to their ancestral roots.
The carnival kicked off with a spectacular display of energy and tradition as Brazilian descendants adorned in vibrant, colorful carnival attire performed to the delight of attendees. The event highlighted the richness of African cultural heritage, featuring traditional music, dance, intricate costumes, and delectable local cuisines.
A Call to the Diaspora
Speaking at the event, Mr. Wanle Akinboboye, the convener of Ipada Carnival and CEO of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, emphasized the festival’s role as a bridge connecting Africans in the diaspora to their roots.
“This carnival is about bringing back people of African descent to reconnect with their heritage,” Akinboboye explained. “We have 32 million Africans in the Caribbean, 66 million in the United States, 120 million in Brazil, and approximately 9.6 million in Europe. Our aim is to entice them back to the continent to add value to Africa’s economic and cultural growth.”
