The Plateau State Government has announced plans to renovate the historic Hill Station Hotel in Jos with a budget of N8.5 billion. This project aims to transform the hotel into a world-class facility.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang shared this news on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC) has signed an agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment and Management Limited to finance the renovation.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of this project, saying, "In line with my commitment to revitalizing legacy projects, I am pleased to announce that the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC) has entered into a head-of-term agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment and Management Limited to refurbish the Hill Station Hotel in Jos to a world-class standard establishment."
The Governor personally oversaw the agreement process, with Hon. Danlami Jelka, Managing Director of PIPC, signing on behalf of the Hill Station Hotel's shareholders. This renovation is a major step in the Governor's plan to revitalize dormant enterprises managed by PIPC.
The estimated N8.5 billion cost for the renovation was determined by consultants engaged by PIPC. The investment will significantly impact the local economy by creating approximately 160 direct jobs and additional employment for unskilled workers during the refurbishment. The hotel’s revitalization is also expected to boost the state's income by N8.6 billion through its multiplier effect and create indirect employment opportunities in service provision and supplies to the hotel.
The agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment and Management Limited includes a lease, rehabilitation, and operation of the hotel for an initial 20-year period, with an option for renewal.
The Hill Station Hotel, located on Wada Road in Jos, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1938. It was one of Nigeria's first major hotels and hosted Queen Elizabeth II. Despite its historical significance, the hotel has declined in recent years, with outdated and shabby facilities.
The Plateau State Government holds the largest share of the hotel, which is also owned by the governments of Nasarawa and Benue states, the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC), and a company called Leacon.
Governor Mutfwang is optimistic that this agreement will finally restore the Hill Station Hotel to its former glory, transforming it into a world-class establishment.
