South Africa Summits Shape Tourism Investment and Policy Frameworks

South Africa is set to host two significant tourism events in September 2025.

First, a Tourism Investment Summit in Cape Town (September 9-10) will focus on attracting investment to boost the sector. The summit will highlight smart city development using technology, sustainable tourism practices, and infrastructure improvements. It aims to create a framework for public-private partnerships to drive growth.

Following this, the G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting will take place in Mpumalanga (September 12). This high-level meeting will finalize the G20 Tourism Action Plan. The plan will focus on AI-driven innovation, sustainable financing, improved air connectivity, and building resilience against global challenges.

A key element will be the G20 Tourism Hackathon Award Ceremony (September 11) in Hazyview. This event showcases innovative solutions from young people, focusing on sustainable growth and job creation within the tourism sector. The winning ideas will be presented at the G20 meeting.

These events aim to position South Africa as a leader in sustainable and inclusive tourism. The outcomes will influence global tourism policy and investment strategies, promoting growth and innovation worldwide.

The Tourism Investment Forum Africa (TIFA) recently concluded its third edition, achieving considerable success. The forum acted as a crucial bridge, connecting investors with viable tourism projects in Africa, particularly those in often-overlooked secondary cities and regions.

This year’s event saw a significant improvement in the quality of projects presented. The focus was on facilitating direct engagement between investors and project developers, overcoming common hurdles such as bankability issues and information gaps. TIFA actively worked to streamline the process by pre-vetting projects, ensuring only market-ready proposals were presented.

A key innovation this year was the inclusion of an SME Zone. This initiative connected local entrepreneurs with established businesses, creating valuable supply chain opportunities and offering access to financial and non-financial support from various institutions. This local focus translated global conversations into tangible economic development for communities like Richards Bay.

TIFA’s proactive approach extends beyond the annual forum. Ongoing virtual sessions and online seminars will maintain momentum between events, tracking project progress and fostering continuous development. This commitment to sustained engagement will ensure that the positive energy generated by TIFA translates into lasting investment and growth within the African tourism sector.
