Tanzania’s Msalato Airport: 85% Complete, Set to Boost Tourism
Tanzania’s Msalato International Airport is moving steadily towards completion, with 85% of the runways done and passenger terminal buildings at 51%. The $329.29 million project, backed by the African Development Bank, is expected to improve connectivity in Dodoma and enhance the region’s capacity to host international events. Augustino Vuma, chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Investment and Public Assets, praised the progress, affirming the government’s commitment to delivering a high-quality facility on schedule.
The airport, set to handle large aircraft like the Boeing 787-8, is projected to be operational in phases, with runway completion expected by April 2025 and passenger terminals by July 2025. This development is a significant step for Tanzania’s MICE industry, providing better infrastructure and creating opportunities for business tourism. With strong government oversight and financial backing, Dodoma is preparing to become a key regional hub for international conferences and trade.

Nairobi’s Perishable Hub at Risk: Rising Freight Costs & Capacity Crunch
Nairobi’s role as Africa’s leading perishable exports hub is under strain. Rising freight costs and limited air cargo capacity are threatening its competitiveness. Exporters struggle with high rates driven by a capacity crunch, worsened by increased e-commerce demand from Asia. Infrastructure gaps at the farm level and congestion at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport add to the challenges, making logistics unpredictable. Without urgent intervention, Nairobi risks losing its dominance in the perishables trade.
Industry leaders stress the need for infrastructure expansion, multimodal transport solutions, and government-backed investments in air freight capacity. Stakeholders must collaborate to balance imports and exports, attract more airlines, and improve cargo handling efficiency. There’s potential for growth, but without decisive action, Nairobi’s logistics future remains uncertain. The challenge is clear—will Nairobi step up and secure its position as Africa’s logistics powerhouse?
