Zambia has significantly expanded its visa-free policy, welcoming travelers from 53 more countries starting January 1, 2025. This move, announced on December 18, aims to increase tourism and foreign investment.
The expansion, as highlighted by Zambia’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, brings the total number of countries whose citizens can enter Zambia without a visa to 167. Minister Mwiimbu emphasized that this aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to establish Zambia as a leading hub for tourism, business, trade, and investment.
Hon. Cuthbert Ncube, Executive Chairman of the African Tourism Board, praised Zambia’s initiative: “This milestone reflects Zambia’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for travelers from around the globe. By simplifying entry requirements, Zambia is not only enhancing its tourism appeal but also stimulating economic growth through increased foreign investments.”
This policy change comes at a time of growth for Zambia’s tourism sector. Projections suggest tourist arrivals could reach 1.9 million by November 2024. This positive trend reflects Zambia’s potential as a desirable travel destination, known for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.
Industry stakeholders are optimistic about the positive economic effects of this new visa policy. The African Tourism Board supports initiatives that promote travel within Africa, recognizing tourism’s vital role in sustainable development across the continent.
This strategic initiative positions Zambia to increase its global tourism presence. The African Tourism Board will continue its collaboration with regional countries to promote sustainable tourism practices that benefit local economies while protecting cultural heritage and natural resources. It is hoped that Zambia’s initiative will inspire other African nations to adopt similar policies, further enhancing Africa’s appeal as a global tourist destination.
The expanded visa-free access also supports efforts to promote intra-African travel, fostering unity and shared identity. The African Tourism Board will continue advocating for policies that reduce travel barriers and create inclusive opportunities.
Zambia’s action demonstrates the powerful impact of forward-thinking leadership in the tourism sector. It sets an example for innovative policies that drive economic progress and create a more interconnected world. The African Tourism Board looks forward to working with Zambia and other nations to fully realize tourism’s potential in Africa.
